Issue #019 · Wednesday, September 30, 2026 · 4 min read · By Alex Tiratsuyan

The morning after at Saunders.

Thirteen items were on last night’s stated-meeting agenda — and in this morning’s check, every one of them still reads “Referred”: the twelve matters filed for the meeting plus the Mary Teague Way renaming itself. No posted votes, minutes still Draft, no video up yet. Also new from City Hall: Symra Brandon is sworn in to the Board of Education. Plus the mobile tax office lands at Homefield House today, firefighter applications are open, and the South Broadway survey wants your take.

Last night’s Saunders meeting: no votes posted yet

The morning-after check on Legistar verified

Both sessions ran at the Saunders Trades and Technical High School auditorium (183 Palmer Rd) — the 6:30 PM public hearing on the Mary Teague Way resolution, then the 7 PM stated meeting. This morning’s pull of the record shows the results haven’t landed: every item on the agenda still carries the status “Referred” — all twelve matters filed for the meeting plus the Mary Teague Way honorary street renaming itself (Hawthorne Avenue, Hudson Street to Main Street), the encroachment ordinance for South Broadway and Caryl Avenue, the inter-municipal agreement with the Yonkers IDA, and the ten October proclamations. No vote results or roll calls are posted for any item; the minutes for both sessions are still in Draft, and no video file is posted on Legistar for either. When the record catches up, what actually passed leads tomorrow’s issue.

Sept 15’s money is still parked — and October’s calendar is blank verified

The five headline items from the Sept 15 meeting all still read Referred in this morning’s legislation pull: the $3,321,809.25 petroleum-spill settlement (a spill from about June 6, 1989), the $4,050,000 Westchester Housing Implementation Fund grant for 636 South Broadway, the self-storage moratorium, the former P.S. 9 conveyance, and the 566 Saw Mill River Road sale. And as of this morning’s check, no October meetings are posted yet — Legistar’s events feed returns nothing after Sept 29, and the calendar’s October dates carry no entries. Both of September’s stated meetings fell on Tuesdays; when the next agenda drops, you’ll see it here first.

Brandon to the Board of Ed, and three more from the city desk

Symra Brandon sworn in to the Board of Education verified

Posted yesterday: Mayor Spano swore in Symra Brandon as a trustee of the Yonkers Board of Education, joining the district’s nine-member policy-making board. The city describes her as Yonkers’ first African American female Councilmember, with a twelve-year council tenure that included sponsoring the carbon-monoxide-detector mandate and property-tax exemptions for seniors, veterans and Gold Star parents; she later served as interim legislator for Westchester County District 16 and is currently Director of Community Affairs for Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins’ district office. “As a former Councilmember and active community member, her experience and leadership will be valuable assets to our District and our students,” Spano said. Board President Dr. Rosalba Corrado Del Vecchio welcomed the appointment.

Pledge 182: the attendance push at MLK Academy verified

Mayor Spano and Yonkers Public Schools held an assembly at Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy asking 7th and 8th graders to join Pledge 182 — a commitment to attend school every day and on time. Principal Jonathan Morano will run monthly attendance awards, social-media shoutouts, class-vs-class challenges and an “Attendance Wall of Fame”; Superintendent Dr. Aníbal Soler, Jr. backed the push. The campaign targets chronic absenteeism, defined by the district as missing 10% or more of the school year. The mayor promised to return in June with a pizza party for perfect-attendance students in 2026–27.

Firefighter exam: applications open through Nov 25 verified

Mayor Spano and Fire Commissioner William Fitzpatrick opened recruitment for the 2026–2027 Firefighter Examination on Friday. Applications are accepted through Nov 25, 2026; the written exam is Saturday, Jan 9, 2027, with physical-agility dates to be announced for qualified candidates. Both tests count equally toward the final score, and free prep sessions for the written exam are available. Applications must be hand-delivered with a non-refundable $50 fee (checks or money orders only) to the recruitment office in Riverfront Library, One Larkin Center, Room 101.

South Broadway’s future: the survey is open verified

The city’s “Investing in South Broadway” planning initiative is collecting resident and business feedback on the corridor from Park Hill Avenue to Caryl Avenue — housing choices, neighborhood businesses, walking and transit, and preserving the corridor’s character. The survey runs in English and Spanish at InvestinginSouthBroadway.com, and the site maps the corridor’s four planning sections (North Gateway, Ludlow Station Area, South Broadway Main Street, South Gateway). The effort builds on a first community meeting held June 9, 2026. Worth noting: the encroachment ordinance on last night’s council agenda also sits at South Broadway and Caryl Avenue — the corridor’s south end.
