Issue #008 · Sunday, September 6, 2026 · 4 min read · By Alex Tiratsuyan

The long weekend is here, Yonkers.

A downtown garage got hit right before the holiday, the FTC has a fresh warning about fake parking QR codes, and two burger spots are on the way. All of it, in four minutes.

⚠️ Alerts & Beware

Scams and dangers working Yonkers right now

Every warning below is checked against an official source: Yonkers PD, the NY Attorney General, the FTC, or county health. If we can't verify it, we say so. Share this with someone who answers unknown numbers.

At least nine cars, smashed windows, two arrests at the Warburton Ave garage police

YPD arrested two Yonkers residents after a run of car break-ins at the parking garage at 45 Warburton Ave. News 12 counted at least nine vehicles with smashed windows Saturday morning; YPD said the larcenies were reported Friday morning. Garage or street, holiday weekend or not: take everything out of sight and lock the car. Already hit? Report it so the pattern gets counted.

Fake QR codes are showing up on parking meters FTC alert

The FTC's new warning from Sept 3: scammers cover the real QR code on parking meters and kiosks with a sticker of their own. Scan it and you land on a lookalike payment site built to take your card details. If a meter's code looks taped-on or scratched, pay a different way. No legit parking app needs your card through a random sticker site.

Student loan scams are still climbing, and the state's warning stands state alert

The Attorney General's Sept 2 alert is the one to keep: with federal repayment plans changing, scammers are pitching total forgiveness or fast fixes for an upfront fee. Charging upfront fees for student loan help is illegal in New York. Never share your Federal Student Aid login, and use free help instead: EDCAP, 888-614-5004.

Still circulating: spoofed YPD calls and fake city invoices ongoing

Callers keep faking YPD numbers, including headquarters at (914) 377-7900, and the phony "Planning & Development" invoice letters are still landing in mailboxes. YPD never demands payment by phone, and the city doesn't bill permits by letter. Hang up, look the number up yourself, call back.

The one move that beats all of them

Hang up or don't tap, then go to the company's official website or the number on your bill yourself. Check what's hitting your ZIP on the BBB Scam Tracker map. Anyone who pressures you to pay right now, this way is telling you what they are.

🤖 AI

AI corner

This week's sneakiest scam needed no AI at all verified

A printed sticker beat every algorithm: the FTC's parking-meter warning is paper over glass. Worth remembering as AI tools get flashier. Most rip-offs around here are still a fake URL, a spoofed number, or a letter that looks official. If a link surprises you, skip it and go to the site yourself.

No injuries in the Elm Street collapse, but the street stays closed verified

On Thursday morning, part of the roof and an exterior wall gave way at the condemned commercial building on Elm Street, sending bricks into the courtyard next door. Residents at 91 Elm were evacuated as a precaution, and the street closed between Palisade and Nepperhan. The city's building inspector said the 93 Elm St. structure was already condemned over roof leaks and a buckling facade, and Hoodline's report points to a similar partial failure at 9 North Broadway in 2024. If there's a crack on your block you've been ignoring, this is the nudge.
