Issue #007 · Thursday, September 3, 2026 · 4 min read · By Alex Tiratsuyan

First bell rings this morning, Yonkers.

Every student reports today, the state just put out two fresh scam warnings this week, and there's free mariachi at the museum tomorrow night. All of it, in four minutes.

⚠️ Alerts & Beware

Scams and dangers working Yonkers right now

Every warning below is checked against an official source — Yonkers PD, the NY Attorney General, the FTC, or county health. If we can't verify it, we say so. Share this with someone who answers unknown numbers.

Swatting hoax emptied out a block of Ashburton Ave Tuesday police

A caller falsely reported someone shot inside a home on Ashburton Avenue just after noon Tuesday, pulling in YPD's Emergency Service Unit and closing the stretch between Saw Mill River Road and Yonkers Avenue. Officers found nothing. Investigators are working to identify the caller — fake emergency calls like this are a crime, and Albany has bills pending that would make them felonies.

NY AG, yesterday: student loan scams are surging on the new repayment rules state alert

Attorney General James issued a consumer alert Sept 2: scammers are exploiting confusion around changed federal student loan programs. The pitch promises total forgiveness or fast debt elimination — for an upfront fee. Charging upfront fees for student loan help is illegal in New York. Never hand over your Federal Student Aid login, and never sign a power of attorney for loan "relief."

FTC, this week: cloned car dealership websites taking real money ftc alert

The FTC's Sept 1 alert: scammers are copying real dealers' sites — logos, listings, photos, even testimonials — then collecting payment for cars that don't exist. Rare classics and hard-to-find models are the bait. Insist on seeing the car in person or hiring a mobile inspector; "wire transfer only" means walk away. Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Yonkers resident is Westchester's first West Nile case of 2026 health

County health confirmed the year's first West Nile virus case — a Yonkers resident, likely exposed during travel outside the county. Most infections show no symptoms, but it can hit people 65+ and those with medical conditions hard. Dump standing water after it rains (flowerpot trays, kiddie pools, play equipment) and use repellent from dusk to dawn. See large standing water on public property? Report it: (914) 813-5000.

Still circulating: spoofed YPD calls, fake city invoices, gold bars ongoing

Callers are still faking YPD numbers — including headquarters at (914) 377-7900 — and the phony "Planning & Development" invoice letters are still landing. YPD never demands payment by phone; the Planning Bureau's real line is (914) 377-6555 if a letter looks off. And no bank or agency will ever ask you to buy gold or pay a "recovery fee."

The one move that beats all of them

Hang up or don't tap — then go to the company's official website or the number on your bill yourself. Check what's hitting your ZIP on the BBB Scam Tracker map. Anyone who pressures you to pay right now, this way is telling you what they are.

Spot something hitting your block? Forward it: tips@yonkerslocalscoop.com. We verify before we print.

The library's AI info session is Saturday — last call to register verified

YPL's AI meet up / Q&A — non-technical, free, open to the public — runs Saturday, Sept 5, 12–2 PM, and registration closes at noon that day. Friends, if the cloned-website and deepfake warnings in this issue rattled you, this is the room where you learn what to look for. Bring your questions.

Notice a pattern in today's alerts? AI is doing the selling verified

The FTC says scammers are using AI to clone dealership sites down to the last detail, and the state's August deepfake warning put $8 billion in annual losses on cloned voices and fake videos. The tech changes weekly; the tell doesn't. Guaranteed returns, pressure to act now, wire or crypto payment — any one of those three ends the conversation.
