Issue #005 · Tuesday, September 1, 2026 · 4 min read · By Alex Tiratsuyan

Good morning, Yonkers.

Schools open this week, a new way to weigh in on Central Ave, and the scams working our area code right now. All of it, in four minutes.

⚠️ Alerts & Beware

Scams and dangers working Yonkers right now

Every warning below is checked against an official source — Yonkers PD, the NY Attorney General, the FTC, BBB or Con Edison. If we can't verify it, we say so. Share this with someone who answers unknown numbers.

Fake "Planning & Zoning" invoices hitting city mailboxes scam

Scammers posing as the City of Yonkers Planning & Development Department are mailing official-looking invoices to residents and businesses. YPD confirms the department does not bill this way — do not pay. A related email version targeting land-use applicants is active countywide.

Spoofed YPD phone calls impersonating officers scam

Callers are spoofing real Yonkers police numbers — including the 1st Precinct line, 914-377-7477 — to demand money or personal information. YPD never demands payment by phone. Hang up and call the precinct back on the published number.

"TD Canada Trust" letter promising a fortune mail fraud

A physical letter claiming to be from TD Canada Trust Bank is landing in Yonkers mailboxes, offering large sums in exchange for "processing fees" or your banking details. Classic advance-fee fraud — do not respond.

Con Ed impersonators knocking on Yonkers doors in person

A resident reported someone at their door claiming to be from Con Edison and asking to see their utility bill. Con Ed reps never demand payment or personal info at the door. Note: Con Ed account numbers recently changed from 15 to 11 digits — real reps know this.

NY AG warns: "gold bar" scams draining seniors' savings statewide

A fake computer pop-up claims your accounts are compromised, then convinces you to convert savings into gold bars handed to a courier. Over 100 NYPD cases and roughly $100M lost statewide. No bank or agency ever asks you to buy gold.

Already lost money? The "recovery" call is the second scam ftc alert

The FTC warns that past scam victims are being re-targeted by fake "fund recovery" services charging upfront fees. Anyone who promises to get your money back for a fee is scamming you twice.

Utility shutoff calls & "unpaid toll" texts — still circulating ongoing

Con Ed never demands gift-card or wire payment, and NY toll agencies never text payment links. Same play, new phone numbers. Delete and move on.

The one move that beats all of them

Hang up or don't tap — then go to the company's official website or the number on your bill yourself. Check what's hitting your ZIP on the BBB Scam Tracker map. Anyone who pressures you to pay right now, this way is telling you what they are.
